2027 Secondary 1 Introduction
Course System Introduction
1.Secondary 1 (G3) Math | Course Overview and Learning Goals
From arithmetic to algebraic thinking
The move from primary to secondary math brings new challenges. Students must go beyond calculations to work with algebra, graphs and more complex problems.
Our Secondary 1 programme draws on local secondary school syllabuses to help students manage this transition, strengthen their foundations and work towards strong school results.
Key Learning Areas
1. Algebra and Mathematical Modelling
In Term 1, students learn algebraic notation, simplification, expansion and factorisation. They practise turning word problems into equations and understanding relationships between quantities.
2. Coordinates and Linear Graphs
In Term 2, students explore Cartesian coordinates and linear functions such as y = mx + c. They connect tables, equations and graphs, and learn what gradients and intercepts mean in real-life situations.
3. Patterns and Multi-Step Reasoning
Students learn to identify number patterns and derive nth-term rules. Percentage changes, ratios and scaling problems develop their ability to connect concepts and solve problems in several steps.
4. Independent Learning and Exam Skills
Our teaching follows three steps: Identify the Problem Type → Analyse the Strategy → Practise the Skill. Error analysis and timed practice help students recognise learning gaps, improve accuracy and build speed.
Learning Goals
The programme helps students build strong foundations, develop independent problem-solving skills and gain confidence for school assessments and further math studies.
2. Secondary 1 (G3) Math | Key Learning Areas
Term 1: Build Strong Foundations in Numbers and Algebra
-
Number Concepts (Lessons 1–5): Prime factorisation, HCF and LCM applications, rational and irrational numbers, approximation and estimation.
-
Algebra and Equations (Lessons 6–9): Simplify, expand and factorise algebraic expressions, and solve linear equations in one variable.
Term 2: Explore Graphs and Apply Mathematical Models
-
Equations and Applications (Lessons 1–3): Solve equations involving fractions and brackets, and apply algebra to real-life problems.
-
Coordinates and Linear Graphs (Lessons 5–6): Plot points, understand gradients and use linear graphs to model relationships.
-
Sequences, Percentages and Ratios (Lessons 7–10): Find nth-term rules for linear sequences and solve problems involving percentage changes, reverse percentages and scaling.

Secondary 1 (IP) Math | Programme Overview and Learning Goals
1. Programme Overview
The Integrated Programme (IP) introduces a faster pace, more abstract concepts and more demanding problems. Even students with strong PSLE results or Math Olympiad experience may need support with this transition.
Drawing on local IP school syllabuses, our programme helps students deepen their understanding, develop logical reasoning and tackle complex problems with confidence.
Key Learning Goals
-
Advanced Algebra: Work with complex expressions, fractions, factorisation and number patterns.
-
Geometric Reasoning: Explain solutions logically using geometric properties and constructions.
-
Mathematical Modelling: Turn real-life situations into equations and solve multi-step problems involving finance, ratios and speed.
2. Key Learning Areas
Term 1: Strengthen Number Concepts and Algebra
-
Numbers and Number Systems (Lessons 1–5): Prime factorisation, HCF and LCM applications, real and irrational numbers, significant figures, estimation, and binary conversions and arithmetic.
-
Algebra and Equations (Lessons 6–10): Simplify expressions with nested brackets and fractions, factorise using common factors and grouping, and apply simultaneous linear equations to financial and other practical problems.
Term 2: Explore Graphs, Applications and Geometry
-
Coordinates, Graphs and Sequences (Lessons 1–2): Plot linear and simple non-linear graphs, interpret patterns and explore nth-term rules and recurrence relationships.
-
Percentages, Ratios and Speed (Lessons 3–5): Solve problems involving profit and loss, interest, successive percentage changes, scaling and the motion of multiple objects.
-
Geometric Reasoning and Constructions (Lessons 6–8): Use properties of parallel and perpendicular lines, triangles and quadrilaterals to justify solutions. Construct angle bisectors and perpendicular bisectors using a ruler and compasses.
